Discount Calculator

Find the final price after a percentage off — including “extra 10% off the sale price” deals and sales tax.

Quick answer

Sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Stacked discounts multiply, not add: 30% off plus an extra 20% is a 44% total discount, not 50%. For other percentage questions, use the percentage calculator.

About the Discount calculator

A percentage discount is easy in your head for round numbers, but stacked deals catch people out. “30% off, plus an extra 20% at checkout” is not 50% off — the second discount only applies to the already reduced price, so the true saving is 44%.

This calculator applies discounts in the order shops do, then optionally adds sales tax on the discounted amount, and tells you the effective total discount.

How to use it

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage.
  3. If there is a second discount applied at checkout, add it as the extra discount.
  4. Optionally add your local sales tax to see what you will actually pay.

The formula

Sale price = Price × (1 − D1 ÷ 100) × (1 − D2 ÷ 100)

  • Amount saved = Original price − Sale price (before tax).
  • Effective discount = Amount saved ÷ Original price × 100.

Worked example

$120 jacket, 25% off plus an extra 10%

  1. After 25%: $120 × 0.75 = $90.
  2. After the extra 10%: $90 × 0.90 = $81.
  3. You save $39 — an effective 32.5% discount, not 35%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off?

Multiply the price by 0.80. For $65: $65 × 0.80 = $52, so you save $13.

Are two discounts the same as adding them together?

No. Each discount applies to the price left after the previous one, so the combined saving is always a bit less than the sum. 50% + 50% off is 75% off, not free.

Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?

In most places, tax is charged on the discounted price, which is how this calculator handles it. Manufacturer coupons can be an exception in some US states.
