About the Stripe Fee calculator
Stripe’s standard pricing for domestic online card payments in the US is 2.9% plus 30¢ per successful charge. Other countries have their own rates, and extra percentages apply to international cards and currency conversion. Because these change, every rate in this calculator is editable — check your Stripe dashboard for the exact figures on your account.
The “what to charge” mode solves a common invoicing problem: if you simply add 2.9% to your price, you still come up short, because Stripe charges its percentage on the new, larger total. The correct gross-up formula is used here.
How to use it
- Pick “What I receive” to see your payout, or “What to charge” to gross up an amount.
- Enter the amount.
- Check the percentage and fixed fee match your account.
- Add an extra percentage for international cards or currency conversion if needed.
The formula
Fee = Amount × Rate + Fixed fee
- Amount to charge = (Target + Fixed fee) ÷ (1 − Rate).
- Rate is the percentage written as a decimal (2.9% = 0.029).
Worked example
A $100 payment at 2.9% + $0.30
- Fee: $100 × 0.029 + $0.30 = $3.20.
- You receive $96.80.
- To receive exactly $100: ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30.

For standard US online card payments it is 2.9% + 30¢. In-person, international, ACH and other methods have different pricing, and businesses with large volume can negotiate custom rates.
Does Stripe refund fees when I refund a customer?
Generally no — the original processing fee is not returned on refunds. Check Stripe’s current refund policy for your region.
Can I pass Stripe fees on to customers?
Surcharging rules vary by country, US state and card network. Where it is allowed, use the “what to charge” mode so the surcharge actually covers the fee.
