About the PayPal Fee calculator

PayPal’s fee is a percentage of the payment plus a fixed amount that depends on the currency. The default here (3.49% + $0.49) reflects PayPal’s US rate for standard checkout payments; personal Goods & Services, invoices, cards and international payments can differ. PayPal updates these regularly, so confirm the current figure on its merchant fees page and edit the fields.

Freelancers often get paid less than they invoiced because of fees and currency conversion. Use the “what to charge” mode and add the cross-border percentage to quote a price that nets the amount you agreed.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you want your net amount or the amount to request.
  2. Enter the payment or target amount.
  3. Set the percentage and fixed fee that apply to your account and payment type.
  4. Add the extra international percentage for payments from another country.

The formula

Fee = Amount × Rate + Fixed fee

  • To receive an exact amount: Request = (Target + Fixed fee) ÷ (1 − Rate).

Worked example

A $100 payment at 3.49% + $0.49

  1. Fee: $3.49 + $0.49 = $3.98.
  2. You receive $96.02.
  3. To receive $100, request ($100 + $0.49) ÷ 0.9651 = $104.124, rounded up to $104.13.

Frequently asked questions

Does PayPal charge to receive money from friends?

Personal payments to friends and family funded by a PayPal balance or bank account are usually free domestically. Card-funded and cross-border personal payments can carry fees.

Why did I receive less than the calculator says?

Currency conversion is the usual reason. PayPal adds a conversion spread when it converts to your currency, on top of the transaction fee. Add that percentage in the “Extra %” field.

Are PayPal fees tax deductible?

For a business, payment processing fees are normally a deductible expense. Check the rules for your country with an accountant.
